Project Zika Virus

DEMOGRAPHY OF EXCEPTION

THE DEMEX PROJECT

General Information

Project Title:

Reproductive intentions and migration amidst the Zika Virus epidemics and socioenvironmental disasters

Aim:

This project analyzes how and if the simultaneous occurrence of external shocks (economic crisis, socioenvironmental disaster following the Samarco dam failure and the Zika Virus epidemics) affected migration and fertility behavior. We elicited Governador Valadares as a case study for the project for three reasons: it is one of the largest and most important municipalities in the Doce River Basin, affected by the dam failure; it is the third municipality in Minas Gerais in terms of risk of diseases transmitted by the Aedes aegypti vector; it is the oldest and most important municipality in Brazil in terms of international emigration to the United States and Portugal. Based on a mixed methods perspective, we combine longitudinal data collection from a probabilistic sample of 1226 households and 3015 individuals living in the urban areas of Governador Valadares and interviewed between 2014 and 2016, with semi-structured in-depth interview with 40 individuals using seeds from the first wave of data representing exposure to vector-borne diseases and migration experience. The first wave survey has detail information on demographic, economic and environmental characteristics of households and individuals, in addition to information on disease and disaster (flooding) experience as well as expectation and knowledge regarding climate change. All these data were measured before the Samarco dam failure and the Zika Virus outbreak (and in the first years of the economic crisis). The new longitudinal data are currently being collected (2019), after the crises and during a phase of small incidence of Zika. The timing of the first and second wave of data is key to understand change in attributes and behavior related to the crises. The second wave includes, in addition to all the previous, time sensitive information, detailed questions on reproductive history and sexual and reproductive health.
